Know It All

Deuteronomy 11:18-21

“You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.

I am sure all of us know someone who knows everything or at least they think they do.  I actually do know a lot of very intelligent people in my circle of friends, however none of them know everything about everything.  As a pastor’s wife, I know some very wise and knowledgable people in the ministry.  They know a lot about the bible, however even they do not know everything there is to know about the bible.

Recently, I began an online study about Genesis.  I have read the book of Genesis more times than I can count on both hands.  I grew up in church hearing the stories and teaching them in children’s church, teens small groups and ladies bible studies.  I would consider myself pretty versed on Genesis and the stories within it.  The first step in the online course was to read the first 5 chapters of Genesis with new eyes.  “NEW EYES”?!?!? Well, I am a good student so I ask the Lord to give me “New Eyes” to read His word.

I am a speed reader but have never been able to speed read the bible.  Go figure.  I think God wants us to chew on his word 25 times before swallowing so no speed reading allowed.  As I began to read His word, I felt a little disappointed, because the same olds words I had read hundreds of times before were not new or fresh.  THEN, it happened.  My NEW EYES saw several things that I had never SEEN before.  I had read Genesis  so many times but never really saw what I had just read.  I was so excited!  The excitement spurred me on to read even more of the 5 chapters.  I could barely stop at 5.

I have taken seminary courses, listened to preaching on Sunday mornings, taught and attended bible studies.  I have to admit, like many long time Christians I sometimes feel like there is nothing new under the sun when it comes to bible studies.  As I help select studies at our church I search to pick out something new and fresh.  My husband, the pastor of our church, doesn’t like to teach studies, but he doesn’t object to our church using them.  He teaches studies directly from the bible, book by book, chapter by chapter or verse by verse.

This post is not to discourage you from attending a book study or to pressure you to attend an in-depth  study on a book of the bible.  This post is to challenge you to read God’s word with “NEW EYES”. Pray that God will show you something “NEW”.  Pray that God will give you a “NEW” excitement about what you read. Hebrews 4:12 says “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”  It is ALIVE.

God wants you to not only read his word but to read it so much that you can hide it in your heart. Psalm 119:11 (NIV) I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.  He wants us to know what.  To hide you have to know it.  To know it you have to read it.

Hebrews 5:12-13 (NLT) “You have been Christians a long time now, and you ought to be teaching others. Instead, you need someone to teach you again the basic things a beginner must learn about the Scriptures. You are like babies who drink only milk and cannot eat solid food. And a person who is living on milk isn’t very far along in the Christian life and doesn’t know much about doing what is right.”  Being a Christian for a long does not give us a pass, it gives us more responsibility.

As a pastors wife, I have heard many older Christians say “I did my time of service in the church and now it is time for the younger generation to step up and serve.”  Maybe they heard others say that to them when they were young or maybe they think that there is not really anything new under the sun when it comes to church or the Bible.  Either way, I hope that those of us, including myself, never become weary of doing good work nor of spreading the gospel to others.  Galatians 6:9 (KJV)And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

If you don’t know Jesus and want to know him, just let me know and I can take you through the simple but important steps to do just that.  If you are a Christian get into God’s word with some “NEW EYES” today and since it is alive check on it each day to see what God is growing in your heart.  May your heart feel like it is bursting at the seems with Gods word and that joy that comes taking it in.

Make Jesus Great Again

Philippians 3:7-9a NLT – I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him.

Some of you may be offended that I used anything similar to our Presidents words in todays title. If you are offended then be sure to read yesterdays post then come back and read today’s post. LOL. Seriously, I have had this scripture and this title on my mind for days now.

Did you know that Rock Hill has a population of 69,103 residents and is the 5th largest city in South Carolina? Did you know that there were 8051 churches in SC as of the most current statistics? That’s a lot of churches. A lot of people who attend church. If you dig deep into the statistics you can see the number of people in our city who go to church, what they believe about God and what required to be a Christian. Ultimately, the statistics show that there are a lot of people who do not go to church and/or are not saved in our city.

The scripture says everything is worthless when compared to knowing Christ. EVERYTHING. If we want to make Jesus Great Again we, the Christians have to believe He is great. Our actions and our words must show that He is great. Things that are important to us take priority in our lives. The important things are in our conversations and we make time for them. I can assure you every one that knows me and spends any time talking to me knows that my grandkids are important to me. I talk about them every chance I get. I rearrange my work and personal life for them. I take their phone calls and/or face time calls. I go to their special events and love to celebrate them on birthdays and holidays. My grandchildren are great!

This scripture also says “For His sake, I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him.” Ladies, there is nothing as important than Christ and our relationship with him. As a young mother and new wife I struggled with this thought. The love we have for our family, especially our own flesh and blood, is indescribable. I used to think it was unimaginable to love someone more than them. But as I have grown older I realized that God loves them more than me. Really. Hard to believe, because I love them all so much.

If we want to make America Great Again, we have to make Jesus Great Again. He is great right? Do you show it? Are you saying it? These are not questions for you to necessarily answer in this post but to internalize. We live in a time where there is much brokenness in our world. Jesus is the answer. I believe it. I have seen the miracles of families restored, marriages saved, bodies healed, forgiveness given, and entry to heaven granted by those accepting Christ as their savior. He is the greatest and He deserves our praise, our worship and He deserves to be number one in our lives.

The great news is that if you do not know Jesus you can come to know Him today. If you do know Him and you are not sharing the good news, you can decide to do it beginning right now. Ladies, we can make a difference in this world and we start in our homes. As an old saying goes, “if mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy.” Making Jesus Great Again begins with one person. That person spreads it to their home, their work, their friends, their family and their churches. You can do it. I believe in you! Lets make Jesus Great Again!!
